Chief medical officers are employed by hospitals, other medical care facilities, and large healthcare companies. They also work for medical and biotech startups, healthcare or insurance consulting companies, and corporations.

Starting Out

Aspiring CMOs must work as physicians (ideally with experience in management positions) in clinical settings for at least seven years before being qualified to work in the field. They can apply for a CMO position that is posted by their current employer or seek out the services of an executive recruiter to help identify open positions. They can also learn about job openings by attending career fairs and visiting the Web sites of potential employers.
