The U.S. Department of Labor does not provide an employment outlook for CMOs, but it does report that job opportunities for top executives who work in the healthcare and social assistance sector are projected to grow 6.9 percent from 2024 to 2034, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. This is faster than the average (3 percent) for all careers. Demand for CMOs will continue to increase because of the growing complexity of the healthcare system and ongoing concerns about providing quality patient care while also taking into account the financial challenges that are associated with the delivery of healthcare. Demand will also grow for CMOs at corporations. These chief medical officers “have a broad responsibility for all health issues that can affect a company, providing guidance to corporate leaders on regulatory affairs, managing employee health and well-being, and communicating medical information to internal and external stakeholders,” according to an article about the trend that was published in JAMA Health Forum.
