Employment for computer systems programmer/analysts will grow much faster than the average for all occupations from 2023 through 2033, according to the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL). Demand is increasing due mainly to the growing number of businesses that rely extensively on computers. When businesses automate, their daily operations depend on the capacity of their computer systems to perform at desired levels. The continuous development of new technologies means that businesses must also update their old systems, as well as add new systems, to remain competitive in the marketplace. Additionally, the need for businesses to network their information adds to the demand for qualified programmer analysts. Businesses will rely increasingly on systems programmer/analysts to make the right purchasing decisions and to keep systems running smoothly.

Many computer manufacturers are beginning to expand the range of services they offer to business clients. In the years to come, they will increasingly hire many systems programmer/analysts to work as consultants on a per-project basis with a potential client. These workers would perform essentially the same duties, with the addition of extensive follow-up maintenance. They would analyze business needs and suggest proper systems to answer them. In addition, more and more independent consulting firms are hiring systems programmer/analysts to perform the same tasks.

The need for new systems to integrate with the wireless Internet (WiFi) and personal mobile computers has created growth in demand for experienced analysts who are well versed in integration and systems development. Demand for information security specialists, to help protect the transmission of sensitive data, is also expected to grow quickly.

Analysts with advanced degrees in computer science or computer engineering will be in great demand. Individuals with master's degrees in business administration with a specialization in information systems will also be highly desirable.
