Chief Information Security Officers

Chief information security officers work in typical office settings. They spend their days studying the latest IT security issues, testing systems, meeting with colleagues, and working with their team if an attempt is made (or succeeds) to attack their organization’s IT systems. Many log a standard 40-hour week, but some are required to work 50 to 60 hours a week to address a cybersecurity crisis. A CISO who is employed by a large corporation that has properties throughout the country or world will need to travel to other offices or facilities to meet with cybersecurity staff and other executives, as well as to inspect the physical IT infrastructure at these locations.

The majority of CISOs are happy with their careers. In fact, 82 percent of chief information security officers who were surveyed by PayScale.com in 2024 reported being “highly satisfied” with their occupational choice.
