Color scientists are employed in the surface color (e.g., textile, printing, pigment, coating, plastic, cosmetics, food), lighting, and digital imaging (e.g., displays, printers, projectors, cameras) industries. Some work as consultants, while others are employed as college professors.

Starting Out

New college graduates can become color scientists, but some aspiring scientists enter the field after working as color technologists or technicians at printing, textile manufacturing, display technology, and other companies.

Aspiring color scientists can learn about job opportunities by using the services of an executive recruiter, attending online and in-person networking events and career fairs, utilizing the resources of their school’s career center and professional associations, and by contacting companies directly about openings. Additionally, the Inter-Society Color Council offers Fluorescent-Fridays (https://iscc.org/Fluorescent-Fridays), “one-hour virtual events serving as a platform for university students from all disciplines to network with color professionals and fellow students.”
