Color Scientists

Experience, Skills, and Personality Traits

Aspiring color scientists can enter the field directly after earning a college degree and obtaining experience via internships and other experiential learning opportunities. Others become eligible to work as color scientists by obtaining one to two years of experience in lower-level color science positions (e.g., color technologist, color technician).

Color scientists must have excellent color vision and a comprehensive understanding of colorimetry and color theory and its practical applications, as well as familiarity with color standards and guidelines in their industry. This career requires an understanding of how humans perceive and respond to color, as well as how lighting and setting influence the perception of colors. Color scientists also need to know how to use spectrophotometers, colorimeters, and other equipment, as well as statistical, collaboration, and project management software. Color scientists—especially those who work in digital settings—need strong programming skills (e.g., Python, R, MATLAB, Mathematica).

Color scientists must have effective communication, interpersonal, and collaboration skills because they work closely with engineers, material scientists, designers, and marketing professionals, as well as with clients. Other important traits for color scientists include top-notch analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills; a detail-oriented personality; patience and persistence; creativity; the ability to work both independently and as a member of a team; and good project management, organizational, and time-management abilities.
