Color Scientists

The Job

Color scientists focus on a wide range of color technology applications such as for textiles, cosmetics, furnishings, foodstuffs, paper, medical products, and digital products. Their job duties vary by education level, type of employer, and other factors. Some of their main responsibilities include using spectrophotometers and colorimeters to conduct experiments on color perception and measurements; developing algorithms to ensure correct color reproduction and color difference evaluation, and analyzing data to assist in the formulation of new pigments, paints, and dyes. Color scientists also conduct tests to ensure that colors remain consistent during multiple production batches. If they detect color variations, they conduct research to identify and address these issues. Color scientists also prepare technical documentation, mentor and train new staff, and create presentations and reports for executives, who may not have backgrounds in color science.

A color scientist who works on digital products—such as HoloLens displays, augmented reality headsets, or tablet computers—focuses on a variety of image quality aspects. They ensure that accurate or preferred colors are produced, that brightness and color are uniform throughout the product, and that colors meet set standards based on ambient conditions (e.g., dark or dimly lit indoor settings, bright outdoor settings).

For both physical and digital products, color scientists work closely with color technicians and technologists, engineers, materials scientists, programmers, and digital developers to meet project goals.
