Internet Security Specialists

Work Environment

Because Internet security specialists work with computers and computers require a controlled atmosphere, the work environment is typically indoors in a well-lit, climate-controlled office. Security specialists can expect many hours of sitting in front of a computer screen using a keyboard or touchscreen. Work is generally done alone, although a consultant might train an in-house person on how to use certain software or the specialist may work as part of a team or security department.

Most work schedules require 40 to 50 hours a week. Consultants travel frequently, and their work schedules do not necessarily follow typical nine-to-five working hours. There are instances in which additional hours are required—for example, if a serious breach of security is detected and time is of the essence to fix it. It is not uncommon for employees to be on call so they can respond quickly to critical situations.

Although this line of work might seem stressful, it generally is not. Most businesses see the value of protecting their information and budget appropriately for the necessary tools, equipment, and staff.
