Legal Operations Specialists

Outlook

Job opportunities for business operations specialists are expected to grow 5 percent from 2023 to 2033, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. This is about as fast as the average for all careers.

The percentage of law firms that employ legal operations specialists has increased in recent years. In fact, 41 percent of corporate law departments surveyed by the business intelligence firm Gartner in 2020 reported having a legal operations manager who was not an attorney—an increase of 21 percent since 2018. The increase is tied to a growing need to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and integrate more technology into their daily operations. The survey also found that corporations are increasingly hiring specialists with expertise in commercial contract management, intellectual property, and regulatory compliance. Job responsibilities that are increasingly being emphasized for LOSs include maintaining legal department technology, billing coordination, and tracking internal and external legal spending.
