Chief Information Officers

Earnings

Earnings among CIOs vary substantially based on the type and size of the employer, their experience and educational background, and other such factors. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, in May 2023, the median annual salary of computer and information managers, which includes chief information officers, was $169,510. The top 25 percent earned more than $214,050 annually, and the lowest 10 percent earned less than $101,590 per year. Since CIO represents the highest paying information technology position in an organization, the salaries of CIOs working in larger employers will be on the higher end of this salary range. According to the Robert Half Technology 2024 Salary Guide, chief information officers had salaries that ranged from $204,250 to $290,000.

Benefits for CIOs depend on the employer but generally include health insurance, retirement plans, and paid vacation and sick days. Bonuses and stock options may also be offered. CIOs working for government and nonprofit organizations generally receive fewer benefits.
