Internet of Things developers advance by receiving pay raises, performance bonuses, and other monetary rewards. Others consider moving to a larger or more prestigious employer as a form of advancement (often because such a position allows them to work on more interesting projects and, of course, receive better pay and benefits). An experienced developer with leadership abilities can advance to the position of lead IoT developer, who oversees the work of other developers and interacts closely with managers to meet project goals. Some companies employ chief Internet of Things officers, who serve as the bridge between research and development, design, and production departments, but most are more likely to employ chief technology officers, who evaluate new technologies to identify how they can improve company efficiency, oversee all IT-related issues at their organization, and collaborate with other executives regarding short- and long-term IT initiatives. Other advancement paths include opening a consulting or software development firm. Other developers become college professors.
