Internet of Things Developers

Experience, Skills, and Personality Traits

Any IoT development experience via an internship, co-op, or a part-time job will be useful for aspiring developers. Some employers require candidates for top IoT developer positions to have two to five years of hands-on experience in IoT application development, cloud networking, user experience design, or other fields.

Some employers require IoT job candidates to have specialized skills. For example, some seek candidates with experience working with hardware sensors, devices, machines, or industrial programmable logic controllers and their respective network communication protocols. Others prefer to hire candidates with knowledge of augmented or virtual reality technologies. And still others seek candidates who have experience in a specific industry, such as health care, driverless vehicles, or advanced manufacturing.

To be a successful IoT developer, you must be detail oriented and a good troubleshooter and problem solver, possess an innovative mindset, and have top-notch communication, documentation, customer service, and interpersonal skills. You must be able to work effectively as a member of a cross-functional team, but also be willing to take on new challenges and work without immediate supervision, when necessary. Other important traits include creativity, the ability to handle multiple tasks under tight deadlines, and a willingness to continue to learn throughout your career.
