Internet of Things Developers

Work Environment

Most Internet of Things developers work a standard 40-hour week Monday-Friday in comfortable and climate-controlled business offices. When project deadlines loom, they often work at night and on weekends to stay on schedule.

In 2025, U.S. News & World Report ranked the career of software developer (including IoT developer) as the fifth-best job in the United States as a result of its large number of job openings, strong employment outlook, high earnings, and good work-life balance. The only ranking category in which developers received a “fair” score was “workplace stress.” The occupation received a high ranking for work-life balance and schedule flexibility, as well as for upward mobility potential, but it did get an average rating in regard to stress. Heavy workloads, unrealistic expectations by supervisors, and disagreements between developers and managers about how a project should be tackled are just a few of the negative workplace issues that developers may encounter.
