Internet of Things Developers

Employment Prospects

Employers

IoT developers are employed by any company, organization, or government agency that wants to develop or currently uses IoT technology. They also work for software development firms that provide services to these aforementioned employers. Some developers operate their own consulting firms.

The Enterprise Technology Management Association says that certain industries will benefit the most from the Internet of Things. Companies in the following industries are more apt to hire IoT developers than employers in other industries: agriculture, banks, defense, food services, health care, hospitality, infrastructure, insurance, logistics, manufacturing, mining, natural gas, oil, retail, smart buildings and connected homes, smart cities, transportation, and utilities.

Starting Out

Some people enter the field directly after college. Others work in lower level IoT development positions, including as software testers, before acquiring enough experience to move into a developer position.

Some developers enter the field after participating in internships or cooperative education experiences. If they perform well, they may receive an offer for full-time employment. College career centers are an excellent source of job-search advice. Counselors lead seminars to help students learn how to write a powerful resume or perform well during a job interview. They often connect students to job openings or hold recruiting events at which students meet with representatives of leading companies. Using LinkedIn is another good way to land a job. At this professional networking site, you can create a profile to attract the interest of recruiters, follow companies to stay abreast of industry developments, join IoT special interest groups, and apply for jobs. Other job seekers visit the Web sites of target employers to learn about employment opportunities. Many large employers offer an overview of the interview process, a list of key traits of new hires, and other helpful advice at their career sites.
