Internet of Things Developers

The Job

Job duties for Internet of Things developers vary by employer and the product that is being developed, but most develop software that allows the device at hand to both connect with other systems and function properly on its own. There are also developers who work on the hardware components of IoT systems or who design voice-based and gesture-based user interfaces for home automation and other IoT applications. Others use their expertise in cloud computing, artificial intelligence/machine learning, advanced data analytics (including predictive analytics), cybersecurity, or other fields to develop IoT software and systems.

Most developers design, develop, debug, test, and troubleshoot IoT software programs and components. When they start a project, they meet clients, managers, or other stakeholders to learn about the parameters of the product or system, the types of people or organizations that will use it, the amount of funding that is available for the project, and the ideal project completion date. Then they create interactive dashboards and data visualizations to help stakeholders visualize the design. Once the design is approved—or revisions are made and approved—the developer starts the project. They work with user experience/interface designers, programmers, other software developers, testers, and others to develop the software or other product. They maintain code integrity and organization during the project and troubleshoot issues and solve problems as necessary. During the various developmental stages, developers write reports and give presentations that provide information and updates to managers and executives regarding the development process. Developers also prepare and maintain technical documentation, and some teach people how to use the product and serve as a technical support resource for in-house employees and/or clients. Some developers work closely with their company’s sales, marketing, and business development departments to provide technical expertise and help attract new customers or clients.
