Information Technology Infrastructure Engineers

Certification, Licensing, and Special Requirements

Certification or Licensing

No licensing is required for infrastructure engineers. Tech companies, professional associations, and other providers offer certification credentials in cloud computing, computer security, networking, programming, and related areas. Most require applicants to meet experience and educational requirements and pass an examination. The recruiting firm Robert Half says that the following credentials are in demand by employers that employ technology professionals:

  • AWS Certified Solution Architect
  • Cisco Certified Network Associate
  • CompTIA A+
  • Google Professional Cloud Architect
  • Oracle Certification
  • VMware Certified Professional Cloud Management and Automation

Other certification credentials are provided by CompTIA (which has three infrastructure-related credentials: CompTIA Cloud+, CompTIA Linux+, and CompTIA Server+), (ISC)², and the DevOps Institute. Engineers who are certified typically earn higher salaries and have better advancement prospects than those who are not certified.

Certification requirements vary by credential, but many certifying bodies require applicants to have educational and experience and pass an examination. Certification typically last for several years, at which point the engineer must renew his or her certification by providing proof of CE, additional experience, or other achievements.
