Information Technology Infrastructure Engineers

Experience, Skills, and Personality Traits

Some companies hire infrastructure engineers with a bachelor’s degree, while others hire applicants with an associate degree and three to five years of experience in lower-level IT positions such as network administrator, systems administrator, technical support specialist, or virtualization technician. Any infrastructure engineering experience that aspiring engineers can obtain via an internship, co-op, volunteering, or a part-time job will be useful.

In a way, infrastructure engineers are IT generalists, so they need an understanding of software, hardware, computer networks, traditional and cloud infrastructure, and emerging technologies (such as artificial intelligence, advanced data analytics, and quantum computing), as well as be able to use a wide variety of software tools that help them to excel on the job. Since new technology is regularly introduced, engineers must be willing to continue to learn throughout their careers by reading industry journals, enrolling in webinars and in-person classes that are offered by professional associations, and by attending classes offered by colleges and universities (and perhaps earning a certificate or even another degree to expand their expertise).

Key traits for infrastructure engineers including top-notch troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving abilities; strong organizational, time-management, and leadership skills; patience; curiosity; creativity; the ability to multitask and work effectively under pressure; and excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
