Information Technology Infrastructure Engineers

History

Information technology professionals have been around as long as there has been computer technology that has needed to be designed, installed, maintained, and serviced. When information technology systems become an intrinsic part of a business or organization’s daily operations, many employers hired specialized IT professionals (such as programmers, network and database administrators, information security specialists) to manage this increasingly complex technology. In time, large employers realized that they needed a jack-of-all-trades IT specialist with college training to manage its information technology infrastructure and coordinate with IT specialists. As a result, the career of infrastructure engineer emerged. They play an important role at many large companies, government agencies, and nonprofits.
