Information Technology Infrastructure Engineers

Work Environment

Infrastructure engineers typically work in office settings, although they spend much of their day outside of their office attending meetings and otherwise interacting with colleagues, assessing IT infrastructure, installing new technology, meeting with product vendors and contractors, and responding to pressing issues (such as cyberattacks or server malfunctions). An engineer who works for a company that provides services to other businesses or organizations will travel to the offices of these entities to design, install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair information technology infrastructure—or oversee the work of subordinates who do these tasks.

Many engineers work a standard, 40-hour week, Monday through Friday, but since IT issues can arise at any time, some work at night or on weekends—or are on-call to answer questions. Infrastructure engineers can do a significant amount of their duties remotely, so some engineers telecommute for a portion of their workweeks.
