Engineers

Outlook

Job growth for engineers varies by specialty, but overall employment in engineering and architecture is expected to grow as fast as the average for all careers through 2033. Demand for engineers in consulting, engineering, and research and development services will contribute to growth. Employment growth will be balanced as new technology allows engineers in other countries to work remotely and for lower wages and salaries. The U.S. Department of Labor offers the following employment outlooks for engineers by specialty from 2023 through 2033:

  • aerospace: +6 percent
  • agricultural: +8 percent
  • biomedical: +7 percent
  • chemical: +10 percent
  • civil: +6 percent
  • electrical: +9 percent
  • electronics (not including computer): +9 percent
  • environmental: +7 percent
  • hardware: +7 percent
  • industrial: +12 percent
  • marine: +8 percent
  • materials engineer: +7 percent
  • mechanical: +11 percent
  • mining and geological: +2 percent
  • nuclear: +1 percent
  • petroleum: +2 percent

Engineers who stay up to date with the latest technology in their discipline (such as the use of artificial intelligence in robotics, industrial, and mechanical engineering) and who are certified will have the best job prospects.
